Biographies

Alonzo Adams
B.F.A. Art Education, Mason Gross School of the Arts 1984

Alonzo Adams is a critically acclaimed artist whose work has been featured in solo exhibitions and private venues in the East including Howard University and the Senate Building in Washington, D.C. Rutgers University, Dow Jones and Uptown Records. He was recently featured at the Black Romantics Show held at the Studio Museum in Harlem.

Marcia Brown, Esq.
J.D. Rutgers School of Law - Newark 1994

Marcia Brown has been involved in community service in the City of Newark for 25 years. She is the co-founder of the South Ward Junior Crimefighters, Harriet Tubman Girls Club, and the Women of Imani, a charitable organization serving low-income families. She also served as president and co-founder of the University Heights Neighborhood Development Corporation, and is currently a member of the Committee of Advocates for Newark’s Children, Project GRAD (Graduation Really 26-Feb-2007 um, the Children’s Early Learning Center, the WBGO Board of Trustees, and the Essex County Criminal Justice Advisory Committee. Ms. Brown was recently named Vice-Provost of Rutgers-Newark.

Jennifer Lewis-Hall
B.A. Economics & Finance, Douglass College 1985

Jennifer Lewis-Hall is an Emmy nominated journalist, motivational speaker, life coach and author of the dynamic book – Life’s A Journey – Not A Sprint. Currently, she is seen on many network programs and heard frequently on national radio broadcasts covering a multitude of topics. Lewis-Hall is an on-air expert for WCBS – TV in New York, where she offers her unique and informative advice on relationships, work and lifestyle issues.

Assemblyman William Payne
B.A. Political Science, Rutgers-Newark 1959
Keynote Speaker

Assemblyman William Payne is a member New Jersey General Assembly representing the 29th Legislative District, which includes Newark and parts of Hillside. He is the Deputy Majority Conference Leader and Chair of the Regulatory Oversight Committee. He is also Vice Chair of the Budget Committee and a member of the Family, Women and Children’s Services Committee. Assemblyman Payne established the Amistad Commission to incorporate African-American history into K-12 curriculum in New Jersey schools.

Dr. Clement Price
Ph.D. History, Graduate School-New Brunswick 1975

Dr. Clement Price is a professor of history and an affiliate member and former chair of the African-American Studies Department at Rutgers-Newark. He is the director of the Rutgers Institute on Ethnicity, Culture and the Modern Experience. Dr. Price has won several teaching awards including Teacher of the Year at Essex County College, Outstanding Teacher of the Year at Rutgers University at Newark College of Arts and Sciences and Henry J. Browne Outstanding Teacher of the Year, also at Rutgers.

Arrigo Rogers

The late Arrigo Rogers was an extremely active leader as a student and as an alumnus. He was a true champion for the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) program having been a student, alum, counselor and advisor. He is one of two students who were founding members of the Rutgers African-American Alumni Alliance. He served as the advisor for the EOF Student Association.

Dr. Ivan Van Sertima
M.A. Anthropology, Graduate School-New Brunswick 1977

Dr. Ivan Van Sertima is an author, literary critic, anthropologist and linguist who has given over 30 years of service to Rutgers University as a professor in the Africana Studies Department at Rutgers-New Brunswick. In 1979, Dr. Van Sertima founded the Journal of African Civilizations through which he has published numerous books that celebrate the contributions of African people to the civilizations of the world. His publications include: They Came Before Columbus,Blacks in Science, Nile Valley Civilizations, African Presence in Early America, Black Women in Antiquity, and many more.
